comment from post 6

It revolves being culturally competent and by that understanding religion, mental health, and the combination of both by identifying religious competence as part of cultural competence. This involves implementing as well as determining the “patients’ psychological and existential frameworks; it can also play a key role in determining behavioral variables (which, in turn, influence physiological variables) that have a direct bearing on mental health” (Whitley, 2012). My strengths would be to initially identify the patient’s spiritual preferences, being attentive by being an active listener to the patient’s spiritual needs. Moreover, spirituality is essentially an unchecked vital sign that is essentially to all patients regardless of their religion. However, weakness mainly finding consultation for patients whom are very particular about whom they speak. Also being exposed to different patient populations within med-surg that have different capacities which can be difficult to honor their wishes but do so to the best of my ability. When it comes to patients, it’s important to improve patient care through “taking a spiritual history, respecting and supporting spiritual beliefs, challenging beliefs, praying with patients, and appropriate consultation with clergy” (Koenig, 2008). This is something I will continue to work on as time goes on.

If I were a patient with the capacity, I would coordinate with the health care team about my preferences and needs and be updated on all of the happenings regarding my plan of care. However, should I lack the mental capacity to make such ethical decisions, my advocate would be that of my parents fulfill my wishes when it comes to my plan of care. They will be informed about all options when it comes to treatments and seek both a realistic, viable alternatives should they be present.

Positive feedback

for exceptional genius

Ok, i need to give a positive feedback related to this research question.

For staff nurses in the primary care setting, does the implementation of safety culture reduce the risk of adverse events compared to no implementation of safety culture?”

Adverse events such as medication errors, falls, injury and faulty nursing interventions can be an issue in hospitals, especially for staff nurses with large nurse-to-patient ratios and a low number of employees. While most hospitals have safety standards, some nurses may neglect safety measures or fail to implement them due to not feeling a lack of urgency or importance for safety. Safety culture in nursing may help combat this as it involves the internalization of promoting safety in the ward and can reinforce the need for nurses to provide and implement safety measures.

In order to formulate my question, I utilized the PICOT formula for prevention which is: P-I-O-C or population, intervention, outcome and comparison or control. I used the one for prevention over the standard PICOT as I am focusing on an intervention of adverse event reduction compared to the remedy or treatment of an illness or problem. I selected staff nurses in primary care settings such as hospitals and medical centers as my population as they are at increased risk for adverse events and are larger in population compared to nurses in clinics and community health settings. I selected safety culture as my intervention as studies have increased on its implementation, but could still use more research to contribute to further findings.

Re:Topic 3 DQ 1A vulnerable population is a group that is more likely going to develop health-related problems.  They are more likely to have problems accessing health care, and are more likely to have shorter life spans and poorer outcomes.  Not all persons that are at risk for poor health are vulnerable.  To be vulnerable, there must be aggravating factors that place them at greater risk for on-going poor health.

At risk populations are sometimes associated with  people that exibit concerns with communication, medical, independence, supervision, and transportation services.  The key is based on understanding how a person functions on a daily basis (Minnesota Department of Health, 2016).   At risk populations would be those with cancer, people with transplants, people with HIV, pregnancy, and diabetes.  Some groups that would be  considered vulnerable would be  the econmical disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, the uninsured -low income children, the elderly, the mentally ill,  and the homeless.

In L&D, we see a group that is vulnerable, the pregnant homeless woman.    There is a pattern that typically follows; no support system, substance abuse issues, and  mental health issues.    This group has a hard time advocating for themselves due to the systems many hurdles and also the mear fact, these women tend to have mental health unstabilites.  Substance abuse further complicates their plight.  We have services in place to help them find a living situation that would be in their best interest, however, they are still able to accept or decline help.  We see this population coming in to the OB triage frequently to obtain some prenatal care, which is better than none.  It is frightening for them, they know their child will be taken away from them, they also may fear repurcutions of their drug use concerning their baby.    In South Carolina, drug abuse by a pregnant woman is the toughest in the nation.  In 1997, a South Carolina court ruled that expectant mothers who use drugs can be convicted of child abuse, dozens of women in that state have faced charges due to their drug abuse (“Pregnant and homeless,” 2001).  Being part of this vulnerable population puts the woman and unborn baby at-risk.  These women fall through the cracks without proper advocacy.  There is so much that needs to be done to help this woman find success in her life, it is overwhelming for the nurse and professionals trained in this area, we can only imagine how heavy this burden must be for the woman when she stands alone.

Amy Winehouse had borderline personality disorder, this was her vulnerability, this made her susceptible to self-destructive behaviors.  Freddy Mercury (Queen) was a member of an at-risk population, he was a gay man with HIV.  This made his body vulnerable to AIDS.  Amy and Freddy lost their lives due to their vulnerability and at-risk factors.  We all carry our histories in our bodies.

Discussion

A special focus of this course is executive communications that are succinct, strategic, and supported. Accordingly, your initial post should not exceed 500 words in the Discussion Area. Follow-up posts should not exceed 300 words.

Select any one of the following starter bullet point sections. Review the important themes within the sub questions of each bullet point. The sub questions are designed to get you thinking about some of the important issues. Your response should provide a succinct synthesis of the key themes in a way that articulates a clear point, position, or conclusion supported by research. Select a different bullet point section than what your classmates have already posted so that we can engage several discussions on relevant topics. If all of the bullet points have been addressed, then you may begin to re-use the bullet points with the expectation that varied responses continue.

  • Power is an important tool. Getting the power equation right is tricky; it is the toughest with a leader’s immediate team. Leaders have difficulty exercising power within their team due to the close interpersonal dynamics and face-to-face encounters with other emotional human beings. From your experience with or observation of leaders, identify a leader who demonstrated effective use of power within the team. Why do you believe the leader demonstrated effective use of power? Identify a leader who did not demonstrate effective use of power within the team. Why do you believe the leader did not demonstrate effective use of power? Analyze the characteristics of each leader’s behavior. What were the behaviors that were effective or ineffective? Make sure to analyze how developmentally minded the leader appeared to be as he or she interacted with and led the team. What leadership lessons can you learn?
  • It is important for a leader to use power clearly and appropriately to gather cooperation for and commitment to any decision, building cohesiveness within the team. There are three fundamental sources of power: coercive, utilitarian, and normative. Coercive power uses punishment to force cooperation and commitment. Utilitarian power uses incentives. Normative power uses value alignment. Which source of power is most frequently utilized in your organization? How would you rank the three sources of power in terms of their frequency of use within your organization? Which source of power is most appealing to you from the perspectives of both a leader and a follower? What leadership lessons can you learn?
  • Teamwork requires trust among team members so that (a) all members can depend on each other, (b) all members contribute their share of the work, (c) the team distributes resources fairly, and (d) the team includes and informs everyone through open and honest communication. High-performing teams consciously establish and maintain an environment of trust. Trust becomes a felt presence, an accepted norm, and a foundation for all that the team does. Think about all the teams you have been in. Select the team that was characterized by an environment of trust. Describe the team and what it did. How was the environment of trust established? How did you know an environment of trust was present? What did you see, hear, and experience? What were the benefits of the environment of trust for the team members, their work, and the organization? What did you learn from this team that might help your current or future teams build a stronger environment of trust?
  • Among the most important skills of good coaches are listening and the use of powerful questions. Think about the best leaders that you have experienced. Were they good coaches? Describe their listening and interaction skills. How did they use questions? How did their listening and questioning activities make you feel? How did they affect your performance? Your development? Conversely, how have some of the worst leaders that you experienced used listening and questioning? How would you rate them as a coach-leader? How did their practices impact you and your performance? How might we evaluate coaching as an effective or ineffective approach to leadership?

o BMI or not to BMI—What the issues are

The calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important measurement tool for determining relative disease risk for preventable conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. These conditions may be controlled and/or prevented by maintaining a healthy weight relative to height. For instance, the higher the BMI number above the normal range (18-25), the greater the degree of overweight.

National indicators for obesity, as determined by the BMI report that women are more likely to have higher BMI’s in comparison to men. In addition, minority women including African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans are more likely to have a higher BMI in comparison to white women. However, recent research suggests that current standards for measuring BMI may not be accurate for African American women. Read the article “Ethnic-Specific BMI and Waist Circumference Thresholds” and create a 4- to 5-page report in Microsoft Word document that covers the following:

  • Explain why the current BMI scale may not be an accurate measure of obesity for African American women.
  • How can these findings impact the manner in which physicians communicate with their female patients about weight loss and disease prevention? In your explanation, be sure to describe at least one positive and one negative implication that these findings might have on how physicians counsel their female patients regarding weight-loss.
  • What influence might these findings have on societal perceptions of body image and weight loss?
  • Explain how an accurate perception of body image is associated with appropriate weight-control behavior.
  • What social and cultural factors influence African American women’s risk of becoming obese?
  • What role do the media play in promoting healthy eating behaviors in women and girls?
  • What can be the implications for healthcare policy as a result of the findings of the study?

Support your responses with examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.
