Writing Task:
Write an informative essay that informs the reader about an issue relating to culture and education. You will choose an issue that relates to culture and education, and you will explore that issue through research. You may also use your own experiences. You will then write an essay which thoroughly explores the education-based topic you have chosen and informs the reader about the cultural issues connected to it.
Questions to Consider:
How does culture impact education? Has your cultural background had an impact on your education and how you interact in academic environments? Do ideas involving culture, gender, economics, and ability/disability have an impact on the kind of education a student receives?
Sample Topics:
- You might write about how educational systems in Japan differ from the education system in America, and how/why these differences relate to culture or are culturally significant
You might write about issues regarding the possible differences in education based on gender, or the impact gender might have on a student’s education
Essay Structure:
- Introduction: includes background, context, makes the reader interested in your topic
- Thesis: A good informative thesis will outline the main parts of what you plan to say about the culture/education topic you have chosen.
- Body Paragraphs (as many as you need, but at least 3): Each paragraph will have a focusing idea that connects to your thesis.
- Conclusion: review major points and leave your reader with something to think about. You might also include a possible call to action.
Requirements:
- 1,200 words (minimum), MLA format, 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
- Your font may be different when you post to your blog, but when you write your essay and upload to Moodle it must be this format.
- All sources MUST be quoted and cited. No individual quotes may be longer than 4 lines. No block quotations are permitted.
And Also
- A summary of an article you find that relates to your specific essay topic. Must include a link to the original article.
- A link or post of some type of media (video, song, picture) that connects to the topic of education/culture or your specific essay topic.
- Outline page
