images that Diderot discusses in his review of the salon of 1763

I have attached two of the images that Diderot discusses in his review of the salon of 1763 (Boucher and Greuze). Conduct your own comparison, thinking of each work as a response to current in French society and Enlightenment thought as described by Chu, Heynen, et al. Which work is more “modern”? Why?

What do you make of the “fashion” for Chinoiserie (and China) described by Chu, on the one hand, and the highly critical, and even racist, discourses involving China that emerged in Europe during the Enlightenment, on the other (as described by Johns)?
