Two paragraphs

Create a mini-essay (two paragraphs) in which you use the structure for a criteria-match definitional argument as well as your preparation to defend or attack our sample claim: cheerleaders are athletes.

In the first paragraph establish the Y term:

The “criteria” part of the structure defines the Y term (athletes) by setting forth the criteria that must be met to be considered a Y (these criteria are the warrants for the argument). (From our handout, attached.)

In the second paragraph establish whether cheerleaders do or do not qualify as athletes. Base your estimate on the extent to which you believe that cheerleaders possess the same criteria as athletes. Do they possess all of the criteria, some of the criteria, all of the criteria but to a limited degree? (Regardless of which position you take, consider the conditions of rebuttal to form your estimate.)

Conclude with a “because” statement that embodies your argument in the form of an enthymeme.

Express your analysis in language that demonstrates a respectful tone for members of both groups and an appreciation of the activities that they perform
